Trivia

When I was posting the scores and recordings of my piano transcriptions of Mozart’s Church Sonatas on IMSLP.org (Summer 2011), I found that the composition page for this particular one was missing so I created it myself, in order to post my files.

Church Sonatas (Sonate da Chiesa) have always piqued my interest ever since finding them listed in the complete catalog of Mozart’s works. The first time I had access to a complete, printed list of Mozart’s works was in late 1999 when I bought and read a book about Mozart’s life; a full list of works was included as a bonus appendix. That’s the first time I ever saw the term “Sonata da Chiesa”, however I had absolutely no way of obtaining a recording or a score of them, so I could only imagine how they sounded.

Fast forward to year 2009: while browsing YouTube I found by chance the complete set of Church Sonatas on the (now defunct) channel “FranzFerencLiszt”. That’s how I finally got round to listen to these works… and I was very pleasantly surprised to find out they didn’t sound at all like “serious” works but much more like one-movement light-hearted divertimenti. The element that made them “church” sonatas was only the inclusion of an organ in the instrumentation. Other than that, they totally contradicted the image I had built in my mind, that was for some reason J. S. Bach’s sonatas for violin solo in minor key with some more instruments.

I liked these works, and they were short too, why not transcribing them? I tried one of the easiest ones (the KV.145) and it worked. WTH, I dediced to transcribe all (17) of them. This became the second large scale transcribing project I undertook (after the complete Cello Suites of J. S. Bach) and the first I completed. It begun as a real spree at first: projects tbpt11 to tbpt19 are all Mozart Church Sonatas and tbpt12 to tbpt19 were done in about 10 days. I would work on them just about every day after my RL job (I still had that much energy in me). That was also because I chose first the ones I liked more. Of the next set of ten projects (tbpt21..30), all the uneven ones are Mozart Church Sonatas. The last three were done as tbpt31,32,33. The very first (this one, KV.145) was done on 9 July 2009, the last batch of three (and with them, the whole project) was completed on 17 October of the same year.

Later on I discovered also Corelli’s Church Sonatas and those were much closer to the first idea of “church sonata” that I had in mind before discovering Mozart’s ones. I have *thought* about transcribing these too but I never did, so far.
