The Neue Mozart Ausgabe taught me that Mozart’s Marches most of the time aren’t stand alone pieces, but are paired with a full divertimento, acting much like a “prelude” to the divertimento. In this case however there is no divertimento following the march, it is a stand-alone piece (well, let’s hope there wasn’t a lost divertimento that followed, or else that it will be discovered in the future!).

This is a short episode in the “Mozart Symphonies” series, not the “Mozart Dances for Orchestra” one: as we learn from IMSLP and elsewhere, this was an alternate movement for Symphony KV 338.

I though I was in for a freebie when I chose this one-movment work but I turned out wrong, it wasn’t easy at all to work on with all those voices.

The first quartet in this Opus was the last one I transcribed, thus completing my first full set of string quartets. Note there was a long hiatus (read: laziness) period between completion of the first and the other movements.

The first movement of this Quartet never fails to remind me, starting from bar 18, of Mozart’s String Quintet in the same tonality (the No.3 KV 515).

I discovered this through a bargain CD I spotted and bought at some newsstand’s. Other works included were the Octet Op.103 and something else for winds.

The movement that first caught my transcriber ears’ attention was the jolty Scherzo; then if I set on transcribing it, I might as well transcribe the whole trio!

It wasn’t a very hard transcription to do since there were only three voices, however the English Horn voice was something of an handicap because it is scored on the dominant (G major) so I had to visually transpose it all the time. In the fourth movement there were a couple of passages where I had to compose a bass line to fill up: with only the original voices it sounded incomplete when ported on the piano. Also in the fourth movement, there was a cadenza to fill up: I composed a short one based on the reference recording I had been using.

This symphony is playful Mozart at his best. Who cares if the sister symphony KV 201 is much more known, I like this one so much, and I had a blast transcribing it.

I was very hyped when I started this project, and very satisfied when I completed it, because it was my first transcription of a full symphony (projects tbpt2 and tbpt5 were single movements).

Trivia

Symphony No.28 KV 200 <–> tbpt10 [2+8 = 10, also 200 multiple of 10]
