This was both my first Schubert transcription and my first transcription of a vocal work.
As with tbpt51, I hadn’t heard a recording of the original prior to transcribing, which I did also in part to hear what this piece sounded like. Actually what stirred my curiosity was the catalog number.
I knew that Abendstern means “evening star” but I didn’t know what the lyrics said – I felt I didn’t need to know that in order to transcribe the music.
The first part was too easy to do, so in the repetition I tried to compensate: I variated the theme by adding an albertinian bass line, and I left in an extra bar that Schubert had cut off.
All in all a very simple-minded approach; nothing to compare with, for example, Grieg’s transcriptions of his own songs, although I did remember them. If anything, they told me it was okay to variate and enrich a bit in the repetition.
If you look at the dates, it didn’t take me a month of work: I just worked on it in two different days with a gap 🙂
